Hans Jacob Strickler
Son of Hans and Margaretha (Hitz) Strickler
Born: 24 July 1636, Unteres-Bruderhau s-Hirzel, ZH, CH
Died: after 1690
Married: ca 1662, Hirzel, SWI
Anna Katheri na Appli
Daughter of
Born: ca 1638 possibly at Applihaus, Hirzel, ZH, CH
Di ed: after 1690

Hans Jacob Strickler appears to be the lineal forefather of m ost American Strickler lines. Hans Jacob was a Mennonite and was born in the Un teres-Bruderhaus on the southwest side of Hirzel, Switzerland near the Sihl Riv er. From the Bruderhaus one can look down to the Sihl River. When one looks acr oss the river they can identify the characteristic sign that identifies Canton Zug. That is, solitary trees planted on top of otherwise rolling and barren hil ls. It is tradition in Zug that when on has their first born, they plant a tree on top of a hill.

Truthfully little is known about Hans Jacob Strickler the man. Factually also little is known for certain. We know that Hans Jacob was b orn at the Bruderhaus where his grandfather had lived for about 35 years. In 16 49 Hans Jacob was living with his father at Har®oti-Hirzel, Switzerland, probab ly moving there in 1644 when Conrad Stricklers estate was confiscated and Co nrad and his wife imprisoned, forcing the rest of the Strickler family to move from the Bruderhaus.

In 1656 Hans Jacob Strickler, nor his older brother Ha ns Heinrich Strickler appear in the Mennonite census. It is believed that both had left for France of Germany about 1655.

By early 1660, Hans Heinrich Str ickler had returned to Hirzel, where he married in December of that year. It is likely that Hans Jacob Strickler returned with his brother Hans Heinrich Stric kler.

Hans Jacob Strickler is almost certainly the Hans Jacob Strickler who married in Hirzel to Anna Katherina Appli by 1663. All other Hans Jacob and Jac ob Strickler lines in Hirzel have been eliminated as possibly marrying to Anna Katherina Appli.

Hans Jacob Strickler does not appear in any records of Hirz el after 1675 and does not appear in the 1678 or 1682 Mennonite census. It is b elieved that sometime between 1675 and 1678, Hans Jacob Strickler again left Sw itzerland for France or Germany. Richard Davis suspects he lived in Ibersheim, Germany in 1683, however at this time no records of Hans Jacob Strickler have b een found in the Ibersheim community.

He may be the Hans Jacob Strickler who between Dec 1675 and March 1680 appears in the town records of M®£nchweiller, Alsace.

In 1679 a Hans Strickler was living near Marcolsheim, France. No Ha ns Strickler appears again in any records of that area. This may be Hans Strick ler b. 1643, Hans Jacob Strickler b. 1636 or it could be the Hans Strickler who appears in the records of Ringsheim, Germany (near Marcolsheim) beginning in t he 1680s. However the Stricklers in Ringsheim were Catholic and appear to ha ve an origin with the Zug Stricklers whose naming pattern was almost the same a s the Ringsheim Stricklers. On the other hand the community at Marcolsheim incl uded a few Mennonites and the Hans Strickler there in 1679 may have been Mennon ite. Records of Ringsheim show that the Hans Strickler there married Maria Muts chler. This Hans was born about 1643.

Hans Jacob may be the Hans Jacob Trink ler who appears at Heyerhof near M®£nchweiler in 1685.
15 Dec 1685, Heyerhof- Hans Jacob Trinkler with wife two sons and 1 daughter; also of note at Heyerhof was Peter Brubaker wife and 1 young child.

Richard Davis or Provo, Utah sug gests that Hans Jacob Strickler lived in Ibersheim by 1683. There are NO record s of any Stricklers in Ibersheim during the 1680s. Here are the official nam e lists for Ibersheim from 1683 and 1685.
