From Frank Duff:
Conrad Strickler[1] Born: c1578-80, Canton, Zurich, Switzerla nd[2] Died: aft 1 Jan 1646, Oetenbach Prison, Zurich City by 1649 (prob 1648) B uried: in Switzerland Married: about 1599, jurisdiction of Horgen, Switzerland Anna Elisapetha Landis (Note that Bruggbacher is today Brubaker) Daughter of Ru dolph and Anna (Bruggbacher) Landis Born: 20 May 1582, Horgen, Switzerland[3] D ied: aft 1656 (some list her death as about 1670) Buried: Switzerland. Biograph ical: Well to be truthful, little is known about Conrad Strickler. For example it is not known where or even when he was born. Neither is it known the place o r date of his marriage to Anna Landis. I have a number of theories regarding th e father of Conrad Strickler. None have any significant concrete evidence to su pport them. Theory 1: I believe that Conrad Strickler was a member of the clan of Catholic Strickler families that settled at an early year in Chneus just wes t of the Strickler family in H®otten. (Click here to see a map of this region) Hermann Strickler lived in Chneus and his descendants moved further west and ac ross the Sihl River into the region of Switzerland that is today a part of Cant on Zug. They settled in the mid 1500's at Menzingen, Zug and by the later part of the 1500's members of the family appear near Neuheim. Among the most common names in these family lines is Conrad. There are two significant facts dealing the migration of this clan of the Strickler family. 1) First records of our Con rad Strickler are at Bruderhaus in present day Hirzel. Note that the Bruderhaus is less than four miles from the center of town in Neuheim, Zug. It seems reas onable that either Conrad or his father simply crossed the Sihl River from Neuh eim to Hirzel. [2] Conrad Strickler married Anna Landis, daughter of Rudolph a nd Anna (Bruppacher) Landis. Both the Landis (then Landos) and Bruppacher famil ies migrated from the area near Neuheim to Hirzel. The logical conclusion drawn here is that if the Landis and Bruppacher families settled in Hirzel from Zug, then perhaps the Strickler family then followed. Theory 2: This is actually a theory that is just that, a theory. There are actually no facts that suggest th is theory is correct, however the possibilities are still out there. This theor y holds that Conrad Strickler was a member of the clan of Stricklers that lived in W®Pdenswil the largest community north of Richterswil and south of Horgen. Although the distance from W®Pdenswil to Hirzel is relatively short, the migrat ory pattern of this clan Strickler family at this early date was from north to south and not to the west that is more mountainous. It is a fact that the earli est Stricklers in Hutten came from the Richerswil-W®Pdenswil areas. There are a number of Conrad Stricklers in the early history of this Strickler clan, howev er it is not an extremely common name. Conrad's information: Again I must admit it is unknown when Conrad married, but it was before January 1600 (nine month? s before the birth of his eldest son) and probably in November or December of 1 599. It is again unknown where Conrad married, but it was likely at Chelen, at the home of Rudolph Bruppacher near Hirzel. Conrad married Anna Elisabeth Landi s, daughter of Rudolph and Anna (Bruppacher) Landis. His residence of Chelen wa s next door to the Bruderhaus where it is known that Conrad Strickler lived in 1615. I have speculated that Conrad lived with his father-in-law until he built the Bruderhaus in the year or so following his marriage. The Bruderhaus actual ly was a farm of two homes and a number of sheds and barns, as was Chelen. The two homes at Bruderhaus were called the Unteresbruderhaus and the Oberbruderhau s (upper and lower houses). Today only one of the homes still stands. Peter Lan dis and his wife, Margaretha (Strickler) lived in the second house beginning in 1629. Before that Oswald Strickler and his wife Anna Margaretha Landis had liv ed there, Oswald, oldest son of Conrad died in Se
