Kenneth Rhodes Johns, 78, of Donegal Springs Road, Marietta, died unexpectedly of natural causes Monday at home.
A federal government employee for 33 years, Johns was in charge of military sales to Saudi Arabia. He retired in 1981 from New Cumberland Army Depot. He then worked in measuring and paving for Roland Paving.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a member of Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, where he was a deacon for five years, Sunday school teacher, congregational representative to Mennonite Mutual Aid and a member of the Ambassador Sunday school class and the Tuesday morning men's prayer group.
At the time of his death, he was president of TOPS (Take Pounds Off Sensibly) and East Donegal Cemetery Association.
He was past president and treasurer of National Federation of Bible Classes.
He was a member of National Rifle Association, U.S. Civil Service Commission, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Maytown American Legion Post 809.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening, the seashore and the mountains.
Born in Mount Joy, he was the son of the late David L. and Bessie Rhodes Johns.
He was married 54 years on January 22 to Dorothy M. Roland Johns.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Mervin R., married to Carin Johns of Augusta, GA, Gary Lee, married to Estelle Johns of San Ramon, CA, and John K. married to Donna Johns of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Diane Marie, married to Robert Coble of Elizabethtown; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank of Columbia and William, married to Avis Johns of Sierra Vista, AZ.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Oliver, Sam, Brady, Robert, Orie and Roy; and a sister, Margaret Kirchner.
