Shared note

Salem and Malinda lost two children in infancy within ten days of each other in Feb 1861. Salem, Jr., was eight years old and Melissa was almost four. They are buried in Conrad Cemetery in Fairfield Co., Ohio. In 1868 Salem moved his family to Piatt Co., Illinois, and settled on Camp Creek. After living there a year or two he moved to Goose Creek township where he owned a farm near Deland. He was active in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was appointed a trustee in 1879 to see about building a church in Deland. The church was dedicated in 1880. It is probable that Salem had a hardware store in Deland at this time. Sometime between 1880 and 1900 Salem and his wife moved to Ross Township, Vermillion Co., Illinois, where he and Malinda are listed in the 1900 census. Salem listed his occupation as capitalist and he stated he was renting his home in Ross twp. He was living next to his son Clinton.
