All that is known a bout Mary Ruffner is that she was a sister of Peter Ruffner and born in Hanove r Germany of Teutonic stock. I also found her born in 1713 and dying in Mass anutten, Augusta Co.,Virginia. She may have been buried in the Opposite M outh Of Mill Creek, PageCounty, Virginia. She may have been born in 22 Oct 1696 in Sigriswil, Tschingel, Bern. She may have been Buried in The Strickler Cemetery, Fort Egypt, Virginia. Who Was Abraham's wife?
For many generation s, tradition has stated that Abraham Strickler married Peter Ruffner's only sis ter. This has never been proven. The only known and proven fact about Abraham's wife is that his wife was named Anna. Upon Abraham's death, his wife Anna refu sed to administer his estate. Peter Ruffner was appointed to do this. It has b een assumed by most that Peter Ruffner was asked to administer the estate becau se he was the brother of the widow. Thus the tradition is established that Abra ham married Anna Ruffner. Ruffner tradition states that the family was from Ha nover, Germany. However, known records of the early Ruffner family place them i n Tsigriswil, Bern, Switzerland. In 1711 many of the Ruffner families were expe lled from Tsigriswil for being Tauffers. Amongst these families was the Hans Ru ffner family who moved to Amsterdam. This family established a prosperous winer y. The children of Hans Ruffner included one Anna Maria Ruffner b. c1696 and a Peter Ruffner b. 1705. It is possible that it was on one of the Mennonite exil es from Germany to Amsterdam that Abraham Strickler met and married Anna Maria Ruffner. Ialso feel that this may have been as early as 1721, possibly as late as 1723. But, like so many other questions about the family, there remains no s olid proof of any marriage within this family.
